Abstract
This data update summarizes publicly available information on retail electricity price trends and drivers at the national, regional, and state levels. The data presented are through 2025. The update intends to serve as a reference document and provide a factual basis for assessing recent changes in retail electricity prices and key underlying drivers.
The update covers: (1) trends in recent retail prices; (2) drivers of year-over-year price changes from 2024 to 2025; (3) drivers of price changes over a longer period, specifically 2019 to 2025; (4) focused attention to the varied impacts of load growth on prices; and (5) data on recent rate increase requests and regulatory approval of those requests.
LBNL also manages two related data visualization tools, one focused on state-level price trends and drivers, and the other allowing users to explore FERC Form 1 utility expenditure data.
LBNL will periodically update this data compilation. The update covers a subset of key drivers from available data: feedback on additional data sources, trends, drivers, and themes are welcome.
